Product code: Civil War purchases Union Round Eagle-Decorated Breast Plate c.1861-1865
This is a beautiful cast brass and lead backfilled round breast plate that adorned purchases a Union Army soldier's cartridge box sling. It was made of cast brass, decoratively stamped with United States eagle clutching both arrows and an olive branch in its talons and the hollow back was filled with poured lead with a steel pin formed to create two loop hooks for the cartridge box sling, worn over the soldier's shoulder. This piece was not excavated, has very little wear, a nice mellow golden patina, and may have come originally from a collection of breast plates discovered in the 1950s that were never shipped out during the war. A beautiful design on a piece that will be treasured by someone who loves American history, military history, or Americana. It measures about 2.5" in diameter. It sits at about 3/8" high. It weighs about 3.2 oz.
