First American edition, first state of the first printing (with errors) hardcover copy of The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin, 1977). The indispensable companion to the iconic epic fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings. With “Father Giles” misprint on Bibliography page and broken type on page 299, the latter of which was fixed later on during the first print run. With map attached to rear endpaper and in good condition save for small tear to area nearby where it is pasted down. Jacket is protected in mylar sleeve, but previously suffered some wear around the edges including chipping, small tears and small missing pieces around corners. Boards are straight and clean with slightly bumped corners and spine ends. Binding remains strong and spine is straight.
