An extremely rare example of James Clancy's legal guide, "A Treatise of the Rights, Duties, and Liabilities of Husband and Wife, at Law and in Equity," published in New York City by the Law Press in 1837. It is the revised 2nd American edition (1st English edition published in 1827). An extremely popular law reference work in the 19th century about the rights & duties between spouses in marriage & commonly called "Clancy's Husband & Wife." This edition has the stamp of former purchases owner "A.S. Dickey" inside the front cover. Alfred Stephenson Dickey (1812-1874) was born in TN & moved to Ohio in his youth. He was elected Fayette County prosecutor from 1838-1858, when he was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas by then Gov. Salmon P. Chase (later Treasury Secretary & Supreme Court Chief Justice). Leatherbound, cracking & chipping on spine, still tightly bound. Covers attached but loose. Measures 9.25" high x 6.25" wide x 2" thick. Weight 2 lbs 6 oz. Old bookmark found inside included.
