This is a very rare copy of John Gaston Aikin's "A Digest of the Laws of the State of Alabama." This is a 2nd edition printed in both Tuscaloosa and Mobile, Alabama & updated the first edition printed several years earlier with an appendix & index. It includes the text of the US & state constitution, statutes relating to the territorial period, & those enacted by the legislature after Alabama became a state in 1819. This was once owned by Henry B. Holcombe, a former Commissioner & Cashier at Alabama's Branch Bank at Mobile. Holcombe, a War of 1812 veteran, came to Mobile from Augusta, Georgia in 1839, & through brokering cotton quickly rose to prominence. This copy has his name inscribed near the rear cover, as shown in the photos. Full leather hardbound edition with gilt lettered red Moroccan leather title on spine. Some cracking to spine. Some tears purchases on last few index pages & loss of front fly leaves. Great gift for lover of legal or Alabama history. Rare Southern antebellum law book.
